What to expect from your Bowen Treatment:

Before the Bowen session
The ideal time for a Bowen treatment is immediately after an injury or at the onset of a complaint or illness. That way, your body can overcome the trauma before it begins to compensate for it. If you can’t get to me immediately, the sooner you can, the better. Within three days is ideal for the quickest and most complete recovery.
But many people don’t find out about Bowen until weeks, months, or even years of trying other approaches or learning to live with it. Bowen therapy offers notable changes no matter when you start it – for best results from your treatment if you: • Don’t have any other forms of bodywork for five days before or after the treatment.*

  • Avoid heavy exercise on the day of your session.
  • Don’t use ice or heat on the site of injury.
  • Wear or bring light-weight, loose-fitting clothing that your practitioner can work through. For best results be prepared to be worked on in your underclothes, under sheets or blankets for modesty and comfort.

During the Bowen Session:

  • A typical Bowen session generally lasts from 15 to 45 minutes – the first session can be slightly longer in order to hear what the client has presented with, and a body alignment examination.
  • Clients usually lie on a treatment couch but where needed it can be tailored to suit the clients needs and comforts – so the client can be treated whilst seated in a chair or even standing if required, for comfort.
  • Bowen’s input to the nervous system is very subtle, and the body responds over time. For that reason, it’s best to avoid other manipulative therapies for several days before and after a Bowtech session as they interfere with the body’s response to the Bowen.*
  • A ‘session’ involves one or more ‘procedures’, each of which consists of several sets of ‘moves’. The moves are gentle, but purposeful.
  • Between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the client’s body to begin responding. This can vary from 2-5minutes. Any wait longer will be explained in advance.
  • As the nervous system begins to adjust the tension level in the muscles, the practitioner senses when the client is ready for the next set of moves.
  • A common approach in the first session is to balance the entire body by addressing the lower back, then the upper back, and then the neck.
  • During a session, the client often drops into deep relaxation or falls asleep – this is a positive sign that the Bowen is working.
