About Bowen and its affects:

The Bowen Technique is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Australia.  It utilises small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself.  It does this by holistically using the body’s healing innate healing mechanisms.  Bowen moves are gentle & purposeful.  The moves deliver signals to the nervous system on muscles tendons, ligaments & nerves, and the body continues its response to it over several days thereafter.  By working on the whole body and not focusing on just a single complaint, Bowen addresses the whole body by restoring balance via Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).  Healing occurs once ANS senses start to rest, relax & repair.

Bowen Works by:

  • Stretch reflex – belly of muscles informing nervous system on state of tension, length or stretch during ‘The Challenge’ and ‘rolling part’ – stimulating the nervous system – which can change pain / muscle spasm.
  • Joint Proprioceptors – for around joints to affect joint capsule and ligaments to stimulate the nervous system inviting healing and with no need for forceful manipulation
  • Fascia – affects between fascia & the nerves, muscle or tendon being mobilised. Improves muscle coordination, posture alignment, soften scar tissue, loosen up adhesions and improve mobility.
  • Segmental Viscerosomatic spinal reflexes – engage reflexes through stimulation of the skin, muscles & nerves
  • Acupuncture points & meridians – strong vibrational effect on internal organs.
  • Harmonic vibration or resonance model – restores body balance & harmony
  • Lymphatics – activates draining of the lymphatic system, stimulates immune system
  • Detoxification – improves body’s ability to function at cellular level

This usually results in the relief of many specific injuries both chronic or acute, with clients of all ages and in all degrees of health.   This can often treat more than a single complaint that the client may be suffering with. In cases of an acute injury I can effectively address only the traumatized area to initiate the process of self-healing at the earliest stage.  A session involves one or more procedures with sets of moves – each set of moves have pauses which is needed for the body to begin responding and self healing begins.  Bowen works in contrast to other hands-on treatments, where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through manipulation,

Below is a list of conditions that is known to respond well to Bowen even with long standing complaints:
